Panel: Children's Writers & Book Illustrators

Derrick Barnes, Writer

Vanessa Brantley-Newton, Artist, Illustrator, Writer

Gordon C. James, Fine Artist and Illustrator

Writing and illustrating children's books is not child's play!

Three very talented and successful artists - Derrick Barnes, Vanessa Brantley Newton, and Gordon C. James - will share their passion, insights, experiences, and how to get started and what’s needed for success in the the challenging and playful world of creating and selling children’s books.

Derrick Barnes, Writer

Barnes is the author of the New York Times bestseller The King of Kindergarten, as well as the critically-acclaimed, multi-award-winning picture book Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut which received a Newbery Honor, a Coretta Scott King Author Honor, the 2018 Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award, and the 2018 Kirkus Prize for Young Readers. He also wrote the bestselling chapter book series Ruby and the Booker Boys. In 2020, he became the only author in history to win the Kirkus Prize twice for his New York Times bestseller, I Am Every Good Thing.

Vanessa Brantley-Newton, Artist, Illustrator, Writer

Born during the Civil Rights movement, Brantley-Newton attended school in Newark, NJ. Being part of a diverse, tight-knit community during such turbulent times, Vanessa learned the importance of acceptance and empowerment in shaping a young person’s life. When she read Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, it was the first time she saw herself in a children’s book. It became a defining moment in her life, making her into the artist she is today. Her illustrations, stories, and artwork include children of all ethnic backgrounds. She wants all children to see their unique experiences reflected in the books they read, so they can feel the same sense of empowerment and recognition she experienced as a young reader.

Gordon C. James, Fine Artist and Illustrator

Gordon C. James’ chosen artistic genre has its roots in Impressionism. The art of John Singer Sargent, Nicholai Fechin, Henry Ossawa Tanner, and many others inspired James to pursue a style that is both academic and expressive. As a result, his work contains a lyricism not often found in contemporary art. Be it through the sensitivity found in his romantic pieces, or commitment to excellence in his commercial work, James always connects with his viewer. He says, “When people see my art I want them to say, I know that person, I know that feeling.”

We look forward to seeing you!
