What you will learn:  In this workshop, Crafting a Compelling Personal Essay, participants will learn the building blocks of writing an effective and satisfying personal essay. Through examples and writing exercises, we’ll learn how to write about our lived experiences in a way that unearths deeper meaning and connects with readers and the broader world.

Patrice Gopo draws on her experience as the child of Jamaican immigrants, born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, to craft essays exploring issues of race, immigration, and belonging. Her essays have  appeared in a variety of publications, including Catapult, Creative Nonfiction, Gulf Coast, Full Grown People, and online in The New York Times and The Washington Post. Her radio commentaries have appeared on WFAE. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and she is the recipient of several Regional Artist Project Grants and a 2017-2018 NC Arts Council Artist Fellowship.
