Developing Realistic Main Characters

In anticipation of tonight's presentation, please download this pdf file Kevin provided:

Kevin Winchester--Getting to Know Your Character.pdf

Kevin Winchester creates characters who often struggle to make their way in a hostile world. The winner of the Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize in 2013, he published a short story collection, Everybody’s Gotta Eat, in 2009 and his first novel, Sunflower Dog: Dancing the Flathead Shuffle, in 2020. He has published additional work in literary magazines including Tin House, Gulf Coast, Barren Magazine, StorySouth, Barrelhouse, Dead Mule, Barren Magazine and the anthologies Everything But the Baby and Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas. Kevin lives in Waxhaw, NC and teaches writing at Wingate University.

Do you have character flaws? While writers love to tell great stories, readers identify with characters. If we want readers to keep turning pages, we have to get out of the way and let our characters tell their stories. The better we know our characters, the easier it will be to step aside and let them shine.

Kevin will provide tools and techniques for creating a new character or fleshing out one you already have. Through a series of guided questions and explorations, you will come away with a character you’ll know intimately. Additionally, we’ll explore techniques to find, identify, and employ conflict that arises naturally from the character to create stories (and characters) readers remember.

We look forward to seeing you!
