First Pitch: How to Grab a Magazine Editor's Attention & Get Your Stuff Published

You’ve been reading magazines all your life.   When you’re done reading, you shelve them   in bookcases, stack them on tables, unable to   throw them away because you might want another look. Why that second look? Because you know you have an article or two (or three, or four) you’re itching to write. The only thing stopping you is a lack of knowledge about how to approach a magazine editor. So many questions! How far in advance should you pitch? How do you know which magazine, which editor to pitch? How long should the pitch be and what should go into it? Hooks, titles, synopses, word count, deadlines, writing samples?

If the possibilities make your head spin, not to worry. Greg Lacour, the editor of Charlotte Magazine, will be here to answer your questions.

Greg Lacour is a career journalist who has been the editor at Charlotte magazine since September 2021 and a staff editor since 2018. Since 2010, he’s written numerous feature articles for Charlotte along with features for Entrepreneur, The Nation, Next City, and covered daily and breaking stories for the Reuters news agency and The Washington Post. He worked as a newspaper reporter for 16 years, the last 10 for The Charlotte Observer, and won a share of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for coverage of Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi. He’s been a Charlotte resident since 2006 and lives in NoDa.
